Published in the Sunday Times, January 21, 2007, this piece was probably the first major feature on Climate Change in a South African newspaper. All that we have learned since makes it even more alarming, especially given that the Paris agreement aims to limit global warming to 1.5 – 2 degrees C, and Sub-Saharan Africa is currently warming twice as fast as the global average.

Tiara Walters is based in Cape Town, where she writes about planet-wide environmental change for Daily Maverick‘s Our Burning Planet section. Recently, she and her colleague Don Pinnock were the first journalists globally to run an in-depth, exclusive report on US research pinpointing pangolins as a possible ‘transition’ source of the coronavirus pandemic. She once hosted a radio show at the Johannesburg Zoo (ask her about it) and she regularly appears as a commentator on radio and TV.
